Friday the 13th Was An Unlucky Day For Oswayo Valley School Busses

2 Shinglehouse School Busses were involved in separate crashes within an hour and a half Friday afternoon in Ceres Township.

The first accident occurred at 2:29 PM on Route 44 near Wayne Paving in Ceres Township.

Kim M. Foster, 58, of Olean, NY, was traveling east on Route 44 when she failed to negotiate a right curve in the road and struck the left rear tire of a westbound Oswayo Valley school bus driven by Craig M. Moshier, 34, of Shinglehouse.

Neither Foster or Moshier or the approximately 25 students enroute to a track meet were injured according to Kane State Police. Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

The occupants were checked out by EMS units who responded from Shinglehouse and mutual aid from several communities.

Foster's car was disabled in the crash and was towed from the scene. The bus was able to be driven.

The bus driver and 6 students were injured in the second crash at 3:45 PM.

Fire Rescue and EMS personnel from several communities were again dispatched, this time to the Coon Crossing Road which originates at the Horse Run Road and parallels Route 44 on the north side of Oswayo Creek with the west end intersecting with Route 44 a few miles west of the Horse Run Road intersection.

Oswayo Valley school bus 25, driven by Paul D. Blauvelt, 72, of Shinglehouse, PA, and carrying 20 students, had crashed off the roadway, striking a culvert and a tree, injuring Blauvelt and 6 students. Blauvelt was wearing his seat belt. Fire Dept. personnel extricated the occupants of the bus.

Trooper Cody Northcott, who investigated, said the injuries appeared to be minor at the scene. The other students on the bus refused medical transport.

The trooper said Blauvelt became distracted and traveled off the north side of the roadway and into the ditch where it struck a culvert, continuing on another 50 feet in the ditch where it hit a tree, about 150 feet from where it left the roadway.

Assisting at the scene were Shinglehouse Police Dept., Shinglehouse EMS, Shinglehouse Fire Dept., and EMS units from Bolivar, Portville and Coudersport. The bus was towed from the scene. Troopers did not identify the owner/contractor of the school bus.

Blauvelt was cited for a traffic violation.
