Think About It

People of Peace

by Pastor B.J. Knefley

"God Blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God." Matthew 5:9

Are you a person of peace? Do you seek after it and work for it's outcome in your life? If you do then you are a person after God's heart. But it's hard to be a person of peace in a world where there is so much violence, strife, injustice, and suffering. It's hard to be a person who works towards reconciliation when so many are out for themselves. In our world today, the needs of others comes after the needs of self. Yet Jesus said that God blesses those who work for peace.

I suppose that the operative work is "work". In other words, it's about striving for, and reaching towards peace. It doesn't mean that peace can actually be achieved in every situation. The real question is related to what you're doing, not what someone else is doing. It's about my actions and yours that will determine if we are individually a person of peace.

As I write this I have received a call from a person who is struggling in a work environment. Apparently it's stressful and there's a lot of drama. To make things worse, it isn't coworkers that are the problem, its the owners of the company. Sadly bringing peace into the situation may not happen without first bringing conflict. And that doesn't mean that the end result will be peace, in fact it could get worse.

God attempts to bring peace through reconciliation. That's what Jesus did on the cross. Sadly, many aren't interested in reconciliation and the peace that they want is to be left alone. I'm not so sure that's what our purpose is. Harmony and peace is the focus and the cross becomes the rallying point. Think about it.

Thompson Statement on Thanksgiving Day 2014

Thompson Statement on Thanksgiving Day 2014

Bellefonte, PA - U.S. Representative Glenn 'GT' Thompson (PA-5) today issued the following statement in recognition of Thanksgiving Day 2014:

"In 1621, the early settlers of Plymouth Colony and the Wampanoag Tribe broke bread together to celebrate the blessings received from the previous year, including a successful harvest. The gathering is the origin of our modern Thanksgiving Day tradition. Since that historic meal, generations of families across the country have gathered around the dinner table to celebrate our many blessings. During this time, we also pause to thank the men and women of America's Armed Forces, most especially those serving overseas and away from their families here at home. My wife, Penny, and I, along with our entire family, wish the residents of Pennsylvania’s 5th District a happy, safe, and blessed Thanksgiving."

New fossil discovered by DCNR's Geologic Survey staff

Pennsylvania has a new genus and species of fossil discovered by DCNR Bureau of Topographic and Geologic Survey. Before this discovery, the oldest know fossil of this infra order (Stenopodidea, known as barber pole shrimp) was thought to be 99 million years old. The new discovery, Devonostenopus pennsylvaniensis pushes the existence of this shrimp back 260 million more years, now the oldest example of a Stenopodidean.

Congratulations to DCNR’s Kristen Hand and Rose-Anna Behr who recognized the fossil in a rock core drilled for a mapping project in Tioga State Forest in north central Pennsylvania. The shrimp was found 502 feet below the land surface in a 2 inch diameter core hole that was drilled in cooperation with Bureau of Forestry.

“It poses a significant impact not only to the world of paleontology, but also to what we thought we knew about how the earth looked here in Pennsylvania 360 million years ago,” said Hand. “The Huntley Mountain Formation, based on earlier research, is supposed to be an area of braided stream deposits, but the presence of this salt water shrimp tells us without a doubt that for this time period we had a significant flooding event that brought sea level up and inland quite far.”

This flooding was probably brought on by climate variations. For more information, visit here.
